Passionflower leaves contain MAO inhibitors, the beta-carbolines harmane and harmaline, so is a natural mood-lifter. MAO inhibitors slow the breakdown of helpful neurotransmitters. It is used for calming, relaxing and as a sleep aid. Also known as passiflora.
Steep one teaspoon in hot water to make the tea. The effect is enhanced by adding St John's Wort to make 'Happy Tea'.
The chrysin in the herb is one of the most effective aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase inhibitors reduce levels of unbalanced oestrogen in the body. This is particularly helpful for conditions caused by excess oestrogen and is also of general benefit because women so often have unbalanced levels of oestrogen.
There is another important reason to inhibit aromatase - it is also involved in the conversion of testosterone to the steroid estradiol and it is estradiol which excessively 'masculises' the brain (see the book 'Left in the Dark'). Of course this could leave excess testosterone - using passionflower in the context of a diet abundant in flavonoid rich raw fruit and vegetables helps reduce unbalanced levels of testosterone and makes the biochemistry more complete.

Contraindications:
Not suitable for pregnant women because it may stimulate uterine contractions. Safe doses for children under six have not been established.
The chrysin present in the herb can increase testosterone levels so caution should be exercised where there is a condition caused by excessive testosterone (see notes above).
